2boxing and 3boxing Explained (2026)
2boxing and 3boxing mean queueing with one or two extra accounts that have a very low K/D. You play on your own account as normal, and the extra accounts sit in your party while you search. Matchmaking looks at your whole party, so those accounts pull the search toward easier lobbies, the ones players call streamer lobbies.
It’s a long-standing method, used since the early Black Ops titles. You’ve probably also seen threads saying it was patched in December 2024. One version of it reportedly was: a trick for hopping into a low-K/D account’s lobby. The plain party version is something else.
Here’s what changed, how 2box and 3box compare, and how the automated version differs from running your own extra accounts.
What 2boxing and 3boxing mean
The “box” is a console. 2boxing originally meant running two at once: your own, plus a second one signed into a low-K/D account that queued alongside you. 3boxing meant three consoles and two low-K/D accounts. The names outlived the hardware, so today 2boxing means one extra low-K/D account in your party and 3boxing means two.
You’ll see the words used as nouns too: a 2box setup has one extra account, a 3box setup has two. We group our regions the same way: in a 3box region you party up with two of our accounts, in a 2box region with one.
Why a low-K/D teammate changes your lobbies
When you’re in a party, matchmaking doesn’t build the lobby around you alone. Activision’s own matchmaking research, written about core Multiplayer, describes a party being matched as one unit around the middle of its members’ skill, not at the level of its best player. That’s why a lower-skilled friend has a rough night when they party up with you: the lobby moves toward your level.
2boxing is that effect run the other way. With one or two accounts whose K/D is kept extremely low in your party, matchmaking is no longer reading you alone.
Activision hasn’t published an equivalent paper for Warzone, so nobody outside the studio can say exactly how much weight each party member carries there. Call of Duty has said publicly that party composition is one of the factors in how lobbies are built, alongside location, time of day, playlist, platform, crossplay settings and player population.
Since Season 01 in December 2025, Warzone’s non-Casual modes have used Open Matchmaking. We cover what that means for your lobbies in how Warzone matchmaking works in 2026.
Was 2boxing patched in December 2024?
In December 2024, around the Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 01 Reloaded update, players and gaming news outlets reported that you could no longer join another player’s session once it was in a pre-game lobby or already in a match.
By those reports, it shut down one specific trick. The low-K/D account searched on its own, so the lobby was built around it alone. The player’s main account then joined that session in the pre-game lobby, and the low account left before the match started. The main account’s skill never entered the search.
None of those reports describe any change to the ordinary version: you and the low-K/D accounts in one party from the start, searching together. That’s just a party, and matchmaking handles parties of mixed skill every day. So when someone says 2boxing was patched, the change they’re pointing to is the lobby-joining one. The party form is what 2boxing and 3boxing mean today, and it’s the form we run.
2box vs 3box: which one fits your squad
A Warzone Quads party has four slots, and the low-K/D accounts take one or two of them. The choice mostly comes down to how many friends you want to bring:
- 3box: two low-K/D accounts, leaving room for you plus one friend. Solo or as a pair, our accounts make up half or more of the party.
- 2box: one low-K/D account, leaving room for you plus up to two friends. A smaller share of the party, but your trio stays together.
- Duos modes: there’s only room for one extra account, so 2boxing is the only option.
Doing it yourself vs letting it run automatically
The do-it-yourself version is still possible, but it’s a lot of upkeep. Every low-K/D account needs its own console or PC (plus another copy of the game for Multiplayer), and the accounts need maintaining because they’re only useful while their K/D stays low.
Then every game is manual: inviting them, searching, and backing them out at the right moment. Some people skip the upkeep by handing their login to someone who offers to play on their account for them.
We run the whole process from our Discord. Pick the region closest to you, join its queue, and when it’s your turn, friend the bot once (it accepts automatically), then join its party, pick a mode and hit Search. Our accounts are manually played to keep their K/D extremely low, and they back out before the match starts. You play the match itself as you normally would.
There’s nothing to install, no second console or copy of the game, no accounts to maintain, and no game login ever changes hands. That matters: Activision’s enforcement policy holds the account holder responsible for any rule broken on their account, no matter who was playing. With us, you’re the only one who ever plays yours.
What to know before you queue
Keep crossplay on. Zerobox works on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC; make sure crossplay is turned on in your game settings so you can party up with our accounts. On Xbox, your console’s own privacy settings override the in-game option, so check those too.
Pick the nearest region. Regions show where our accounts are located, which typically lines up with where Call of Duty hosts its game servers. Zerobox isn’t a VPN, so a distant region won’t change your location; it only adds ping.
Leave Ranked out of it. 2boxing and 3boxing do nothing in Ranked; they’re for your non-Ranked playlists.
Our Multiplayer regions are 3box. The Max plan adds Black Ops 7 Multiplayer 3boxing, and we’ll support Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer from its launch day, October 23, 2026. What each plan includes is in our pricing section.
Common questions
Is 2boxing patched?
One version reportedly was. Since December 2024, players and news outlets have reported that you can’t join another player’s session once it’s in a pre-game lobby or a match, which ended the trick of hopping into a low-K/D account’s lobby. Queueing in one party with low-K/D teammates from the start is still how 2boxing works.
What’s the difference between 2box and 3box?
The number of low-K/D accounts in your party. A 3box setup has two, leaving room in a Warzone Quads party for you and one friend. A 2box setup has one, leaving room for you and up to two friends.
Is 2boxing bannable?
No. 2boxing and 3boxing aren’t bannable. From a matchmaking perspective, it’s no different than playing with friends who have low K/D ratios, and with Zerobox nothing is installed and no game login is shared. We cover the details in our guide to whether 2boxing is bannable.
Does 2boxing work in Ranked?
No. 2boxing and 3boxing do nothing in Ranked; they’re for non-Ranked playlists. In Black Ops 7 Ranked Play, a full party is matched on its highest Rank.
Do I need a second console?
Not with Zerobox. You play on the console or PC you already have, with no extra copy of the game and nothing to install. The low-K/D accounts are ours; just keep crossplay on so you can party up with them.
